Grand opening of a brand new blog!

Welcome to blog of DIY!

We are a group of Ngee Ann students, this is our very first post for this blog and we are doing this as part of our assignment for the module CIS. In the next few weeks , we'll be updating this blog consistently so do check out our blog and spread the word about this blog as we know that you'll learn many interesting things you can do as an individual / a group. :)

ON TO THE FUN STUFF!!

For our first tutorial , we'll be recycling used cereal boxes and making them into tote bags.
(A bag, with parallel handles that emerge from the sides of its pouch)

Things you'll need

1. Cereal box
2. Tape
3. Pen knife
4. Scissors
5. Decorative paper
6. Hole-puncher
7. String

Step by step instructions

Step 1 : Get your finished cereal box.

Step 2 : Seal the opened area with tape (any will do).

Step 3 : Get a pen knife and cut one side of the cereal box like so.

Now for decoration! :D

Step 4 : Get some decorative paper / gift wraps , scissors and double sided tape.

Step 5 : Cover the entire box with the decorative paper.

Step 6 : Get a hole puncher and punch holes wherever your desire for the handles.

Step 7 : Get some string / ribbon / yarn / unused shoe laces.

Step 8 : Poke through the holes as such and tie them at the end. Repeat step 8 for the opposite holes.
(Adjust the string length for your handles accordingly to your preference.)

VOILÀ! You have just made yourself a cereal box tote bag :D

After this tutorial , do you think recycling the cereal box is a good idea? why? if not, what can be done to further improve the tote bag?
Please comment/ provide feedback on the tutorial as your  responses are valuable towards us and it will be truly appreciated :) Thank you in advance!!

Wow! I didn't know that we can create a bag just by using a cereal box! It is a brilliant idea. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Interesting. But can it hold heavy things?

Blogger !iniquitous said on 7/12/2013 08:45:00 pm

It can carry up to a maximum weight of 4kg!! Which is supposedly counted heavy for a simple tote bag :) hope this answers your question! - Admin BrueKat :D

This is a very interesting way of recycling used boxes. In a similar way, my sister also does mini projects like this to create something out of used cardboard and stuff like that. I'll introduce her to this blog to see if she gets any ideas from here!! Thanks and keep the posts coming !!!

@Neil Foster
That is awesome! :) If she does not mind sharing her ideas with us, tell her to feel free to do so! And thank you for the support and hopefully our blog will help many people to open their creativity with new innovative creations posted or shared so that they themselves can get creative and start recycling!

I think that recycling the cereal box is a great idea! But it is too plain if we used only paper, maybe we should decorate the sides of the paper before we stick them on?

Sure! You can design the bag in whatever way you like, whatever you prefer. It will have a more personal touch to it through the hard work of decorating it.
