Four steps for a successful DIY at home


1. Reuse and recycle

Everything does not have to be new to make your home improvement successful. Think before removing things from your home, consider reassigning a role to an old piece of furniture which you do not need or want to refurnish with some simple DIY.

2. Knowing your limits

Know your limits before tackling a project. Not everyone is comfortable with operating power tools, or working on plumbing and electric. Discover what you have interest in and like to do, and go with that.

3. Watch and learn

Learn from videos or even better, by direct observation. The minute you think you know it all, you will realize that there is something new to add to the product or even remove unnecessary parts from it.

4. Become eco-friendly

By Reusing things that can be used more then once or putting them into your recycling bin and make sure the contents are collected when full. Or instead , compost organic waste in your garden to become fertilizer instead of sending it to a landfill or incinerator. By doing this, you would be giving back to the environment and having a compost pile which will improve your soil quality for your garden.

Benefits of DIY

1. An appreciation for the things you have and the systems that make it possible. 

If you make things yourself is discover how challenging and time-consuming it can be to make them , you will be more observant of it. I personally tend observe how each product that I use is made and by paying close attention to the craftsmanship of the object, I can use it to apply to my own projects.

2. Expanding creativity and knowledge. 

There is a sense of achievement you will get from making something with your own bare hands which would be priceless if it takes a very long period of time and it is obvious that people learn faster from hands-on experience than they do watching someone else do something, therefore I encourage all of you to try out new ideas or even follow our tutorials so that you can learn about the benefits of DIY much quicker so as to generate new ideas and solve major problems of the world like the limited amount of land we have or even reducing the rate of global warming.

3. Expanding social network and getting closer. 

When I started doing my own DIY projects, I found many other people online and found that they are very selfless to share ideas and advice about building many things with recycled materials without expecting payment from readers. This shows that there are people around the world that really want to help make lives easier and share the exploits they found so that others can use the ideas and benefit from it.

4. Building by personal preference. 

Most people that do many DIY projects have learnt not to rely so much on corporations to take care of them based on products. Even if you have no desire to become a full-time DIYer , if you have experience in doing DIY, you can provide a certain degree of freedom from products as you can change the way it works and maybe even improve the idea further.

Video Tutorial 1

Bohemian Dream Catcher!!!

Hi guys, I wanted to show you guys on how to make a Bohemian Dream Catcher but the steps would be very difficult to follow if I did it frame by frame , therefore today I will be using a Youtube tutorial on how to create your very own dream catcher!! You do not have to follow it step by step as you can customize your own dream catcher to the way you want! :) So without any further delay, watch the Youtube video and enjoy!

Tutorial 4 :D

You don't always have to recycle just paper or plastic! Ever eaten pistachio nuts and thrown away the shells? Here is a fun fact: Although pistachio nuts are 100% biodegradable, because their shells are so hard , it takes an awfully long period of time before it completely biodegrades, therefore we can recycle this environmentally friendly material to replace other materials such as precious metals and processed wood. 

 Thus, in this tutorial, I will be showing you one of the many ways to recycle pistachio nut shells by making a wind chime out of them :D.
ON TO THE FUN STUFF !!

Things that you'll need

  1. Pistachio nut shells.
  2. Wires and strings.
  3. Pen knife and scissors.
  4. Glue.
  5. Paint and paint brushes.
(Before starting, ensure all pistachio nut shells are paired properly)
       
Step 1 : Get some wire / it is recommended to get it from garden wire as shown.

       
Step 2 : Measure the desired length of the wire that will be the head of the wind chime. Join the ends together.

       

Step 3 : Paint any color onto your pistachio nut shells and glue it all around the wire.

        

Step 4 : Color the rest of the pistachio nut shells of your desired color.(I like rainbows)
 (Numbering helps to keep track of the pairs)

        


Step 5 : Align the desired amount of pistachio nut shells in a horizontal line for one column of the wind chime.


Step 6 : Place string across the pistachio nut shells, ensuring that the string does not go beyond the last pistachio nut shell.


Step 7 : Glue together the pistachio nut shells.
Ensure that there is excess string at the opposite end.


Step 8 : Tie the top end of all the columns of pistachio nut shells spaced evenly around the head of the wind chime like what is done below.


Step 9 : Gather 5 strings and form a loop by tying one end together , this loop is for hanging the wind chime.
       



Step 10 : Cut the other end and tie the loose ends to the head of the wind chime and ...

VOILÀ! You have just made yourself a 

PISTACHIO WIND CHIME :D

Grand opening of a brand new blog!

Welcome to blog of DIY! 

We are a group of Ngee Ann students, this is our very first post for this blog and we are doing this as part of our assignment for the module CIS. In the next few weeks , we'll be updating this blog consistently so do check out our blog and spread the word about this blog as we know that you'll learn many interesting things you can do as an individual / a group. :)

ON TO THE FUN STUFF!!

For our first tutorial , we'll be recycling used cereal boxes and making them into tote bags.
(A bag, with parallel handles that emerge from the sides of its pouch)

Things you'll need

1. Cereal box
2. Tape
3. Pen knife
4. Scissors
5. Decorative paper
6. Hole-puncher
7. String 

Step by step instructions


Step 1 : Get your finished cereal box.


Step 2 : Seal the opened area with tape (any will do).

                 

Step 3 : Get a pen knife and cut one side of the cereal box like so.




                   

Now for decoration! :D

Step 4 : Get some decorative paper / gift wraps , scissors and double sided tape. 


Step 5 : Cover the entire box with the decorative paper.


Step 6 : Get a hole puncher and punch holes wherever your desire for the handles.
           

 Step 7 : Get some string / ribbon / yarn / unused shoe laces.


 Step 8 : Poke through the holes as such and tie them at the end. Repeat step 8 for the opposite holes.
(Adjust the string length for your handles accordingly to your preference.)

              

VOILÀ! You have just made yourself a cereal box tote bag :D
